Irish screen legend Maureen O’Hara celebrated her 90th birthday in style yesterday in Co. Cork amidst family and friends.

Dressed in a black  suit and red scarf, Maureen looked as glamorous as ever with pearl earrings, red lipstick and a dazzling smile. Speaking at the celebrations she said “I have been acting since I took my first steps”.

“I came from a talented acting family. We grew in that environment and we used to put on plays in the back garden and for our parents. By seven, I was already receiving acting instructions.”

The starlet was born Maureen FitzSimons on the August 17, 1920 in Ranelagh Dublin. Taking advice from her acting peers she later changed her name to a more marketable Maureen O’Hara.

With over 60 films under her belt, O’Hara was most famously known for her work alongside John Wayne. One of the pair’s most well known films- “The Quiet Man” was shot in Cong in County Mayo in 1952.

After becoming a Hollywood starlet Maureen was granted American citizenship on January 25, 1946. However she was able to remain an Irish citizen also, this was the first time in history the United States government granted an Irish citizen dual citizenship.

Her memoir “Tis Herself” was published in 2004.
